Family Finance: Avoid mistakes that delay your tax refund - WTOC.com

If you file your taxes in a hurry, you could end up making small mistakes that could seriously delay your tax refund.

The most important thing to look out for is spelling. Make sure your name is spelled the exact same way it is shown on your social security card. If your name, or your spouse or dependent's names, are spelled wrong you can expect a delay.

The IRS suggests filing electronically for the best accuracy, but if you choose to file by hand,?don't forget to sign and date your returns. Also, make sure you mail your return to the correct IRS processing center.

CPA Neville Stein with Hancock and Askew in Savannah says there are also a few big problems?that can seriously impact your chances of getting any refund at all.

"You still owe the IRS taxes from before, or your spouse does or you have a child support, or you owe the state because there's the federal and the state and they actually help each other in retrieving money," he said.
