Fuel rebate ?will help save jobs and stabilise coach and transport sector?

The Irish coach tourism and transport council says that the Government?s decision to extend the essential users rebate to coaches will help save jobs and stabilise the industry.

In the publication of the Finance Bill the Department of Finance extended the fuel rebate to coaches, buses and most mini-buses.

Council chief executive Gerry Mullins said that the industry had faced a four-fold increase in fuel prices in the last 10 years.

?It took a while and it is not over yet. It is not a massive victory, but it will put a smile on the face of thousands of people,? he said.

The rebate will work on a sliding scale based on the price of diesel before Vat. The maximum payment of the rebate will be 7.5c per litre of diesel.

?The coach tourism industry is on its knees following a drop in tourist numbers, drop in rates, and hike in diesel prices in recent years.

?This rebate will help save jobs and improve our offering to Ireland?s visitors,? he said.

It is estimated that the rebate will be worth about ?4.4m a year in savings to Bus ?ireann.

Minister for Tourism and Transport, Leo Varadkar welcomed the inclusion of coach operators in the provision of a tax rebate to hauliers.

?The return of a fuel excise rebate is very welcome for hauliers, bus and coach operators who have been badly hit by the high cost of diesel.

?It will support job-creation and growth by reducing the cost of moving goods, and will also give a further stimulus to tourism in the year of The Gathering,? he said.
