Layoffs Hit 'Today,' 'NBC Nightly News'

NBC News has laid off a number of staffers at "Today" and "NBC Nightly News," the network confirmed on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the network told the Wrap that layoffs at "Today" happened on Tuesday, while a number of staffers at "NBC Nightly News" were laid off in a restructuring "a few weeks ago."

The spokesperson would not say how many people lost their jobs, but said "less than 2 percent" of each show's staff was affected. The New York Times' Brian Stelter said that nine people were reportedly laid off at "Today."

NBC News also laid off staffers at "Rock Center," Brian Williams' now-canceled newsmagazine show, in May. At the time, however, 60 percent of the staff had reportedly received offers for other jobs at the network.

TV Newser reported that the most recent changes seemed to be a continuation of the shake-up at the two programs: two correspondents left the network after their contracts were not renewed, and three senior producers at "Today" and "Nightly News" have also left.

It is the latest change at "Today," which has endured a rough year and a half since it lost its sixteen-year winning streak to "Good Morning America" and saw Ann Curry's messy ouster from the show. "Today," and Matt Lauer in particular, is still dealing with the fallout from Curry's departure. The show is now run by executive producer Don Nash and Alexandra Wallace, overall executive in charge of the four-hour program.
