Bradley Manning Acquitted Of Aiding The Enemy - Business Insider

Bradley Manning

REUTERS/Gary Cameron

U.S. Army Private First Class Bradley Manning enters the courtroom for day four of his court martial at Fort Meade, Maryland June 10, 2013.

Bradley Manning, who orchestrated?the largest leak of classified information in U.S. history, has been acquitted of the most serious charge of aiding the enemy, which carried a possible sentence of life imprisonment.

Military judge Col. Denise Lind convicted Manning of 19 other charges, including seven counts of violating the espionage act.?

In all, Manning faces a maximum sentence of?136 years?in prison.?

Journalist Alexa O'Brien, who detailed each count, is listing the 22 specific counts and the verdicts*.

Manning previously pleaded guilty to 10 of the lesser offenses and faced up to 20 years.

Sentencing will commence tomorrow?at 9:30 a.m., according to The Washington Post.

"The government is saying, keep your reservations and morals to yourself or end up like Bradley," Robert Caruso, a former assistant command security manager in the Navy and consultant, told Business Insider. "The government is coming down hard on leakers."

Manning, who served as a junior intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2009 and 2010, gave 700,000 military and diplomatic documents to WikiLeaks to "spark a domestic debate on the role of our military and foreign policy in general."

The documents included?videos of airstrikes that killed civilians, a trove of front-line incident reports from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, dossiers on Guant?namo Bay detainees, and about 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables.

The disclosures led to some troubling?revelations about U.S. actions, and journalists subsequently?wrote stories based on the information.

*Here's a breakdown of the charges:

'Aiding the enemy'

Prosecutors painted Manning as an anarchist traitor who recklessly leaked classified information with "a general evil intent," arguing that Manning knew the classified material would be seen by the terrorist group al-Qaida via the Internet.

The government previously stated that al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden obtained copies of some documents published by WikiLeaks before he was killed by U.S. special forces in 2011.

Defense attorney David Coombs argued that all modern cases regarding aiding the enemy involved military members who gave the enemy information directly.

Some experts, including Harvard Law Professor Yochai Benkler, argued that the aiding the enemy charge in Manning's case "will cast a long shadow on national security journalists and their sources."

That's because the prosecution said that it would have made the same case if Manning had leaked the documents to The New York Times, Washington Post, or Wall Street Journal.

Here's how Benkler broke it down:

The source gives materials to the journalist; the journalist publishes; the enemy reads the publication and, presto, the source is guilty of the offense of "aiding the enemy".

Manning's experience

The native of Crescent, Oklahoma has been held in military prison for 1,160 days after being arrested in Kuwait on May 26, 2010.

Last month Coombs described Manning as a ??young, naive, but good-intentioned?? soldier whose struggle to fit in as a gay man in the military made him feel he ??needed to do something to make a difference in this world.??

From July 2010 to April 2011 he was held as a maximum custody detainee?at Quantico marine base in Virginia, where he sat in a fluorescent-lit 6-by-8-foot cell with no window or natural light for 23 hours per day ? guards checked on him every five minutes ? and was stripped naked at night because authorities deemed the elastic on his underwear could be used to harm himself.

In response to Manning's pre-trial confinement, more than 250 of the most eminent U.S. legal scholars sent a letter to President Obama in protest of Manning's treatment; UN special rapporteur on torture Juan Ernesto Mendez called it "cruel, inhuman and degrading"; and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's chief spokesman, P.J. Crowley, resigned after he publicly denounced the treatment as "ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid."

In January?Lind ruled?that any sentence should be reduced by 112 days because of his mistreatment in confinement.

Editor's note: Coincidentally, the U.S. Constitutional Congress enacted the?very first whistleblower protection law on July 30, 1778.

Mercedes-Benz Experimenting With Google Glass

When you think of Mercedes-Benz, you think of a company that makes high-end luxury vehicles. But with those vehicles come a lot of high-tech hardware and gadgets and the engineers there are working with Google Glass to add more conveniences.

In an interview with the Silicon Valley Business Journal, the President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America, stated that the company's ultimate goal with Google Glass is to create a seemless door-to-door transition involving both in-car navigation and pedestrian walking directions.

The goal is to allow a person to set a destination at home, hop in their car and drive to that destination and then be able to get the remaining walking instructions on their Google Glass. The Google Glass would have to be able to integrate with the vehicles navigation system to get current location, but would eliminate the need for entering information into multiple devices when both walking and driving destinations were required.

The project is still in the works, and they estimate it will be awhile before it hits the market as the cost of Glass is still a factor and most consumers cannot get their hands on one.

Four things critics hate about Lohan's 'Canyons'

Movies

Lindsay Lohan, James Deen in "The Canyons."

IFC

Lindsay Lohan, James Deen in "The Canyons."

All right, no one expected that Paul Schrader's "The Canyons," starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, was going to be the next "Citizen Kane." But there was some hope that Lohan might revive her career (remember "Mean Girls"? or "Parent Trap"?) with a gritty, raunchy movie.

Then again.... Based on early reviews, the low-budget film about the seedy side of Hollywood stars' lives may just push Lohan's career even further down the slide it's been on for years.

Here are some reasons not to see (or to see, if you're into masochism) the beleaguered starlet's film, "The Canyons," according to critics ? with one notable exception:

Been here, done this
"Canyons" scriptwriter Bret Easton Ellis was fresh and new after penning "Less Than Zero" in 1985, and red-hot in 1991 with "American Psycho," but his stories of the beautiful drowning in wealth, decadence, drugs and ennui is dated. With "Canyons" he's back on well-trodden territory, and there's not even Robert Downey Jr. around to liven things up. Lohan's co-star James Deen plays Christian, who is "blas?, conceited and narcissistic" and a "trust fund baby with a stunning hillside Malibu pad," writes Todd McCarthy in The Hollywood Reporter, but he's "a pale brother to Ellis's totemic character of the 1990s, Patrick Bateman, in 'American Psycho.'"

There'd be serious character flaws, if these characters were remotely interesting
Though psycho, Bateman was at least fascinating. Watching bad people do bad things can work, but there has to be some meat on the bones. "These bozos aren't lively enough to even get cast on a reality TV show, much less be the focus of written drama where some psychological and emotional dimensions are normally expected," notes McCarthy. Along those lines, FilmDaily's John Hazelton has a slightly more positive attitude: The film, he writes, turns out "to be a fitfully intriguing but ultimately aimless psychosexual thriller about pretty young things behaving badly in Hollywood."

It's not even so bad it's good
Cult films can be terrible, yet weirdly compelling. "Canyons" doesn't even seem destined for midnight showings to drunk college students. "Far from the renegade, boundary-pushing, sexually explicit sensation that its makers have been suggesting, 'The Canyons' is a lame, one-dimensional and ultimately dreary look at peripheral Hollywood types not worth anyone's time either onscreen or in real life," says McCarthy.

And the sex is boring
Top priority if you're making a low-budget picture unlikely to make anyone's Top 10 list and you have a prolific porn star on hand: Make the sex awesome. Instead, as Indiewire's Eric Kohn notes, "(T)he mounting scenes of drama don't make the mediocrities especially pronounced so much as they coalesce into a dry, insipid whole." Adds McCarthy, "Any expectations of explicit sex ... are not even approached, much less fulfilled, as there's nothing beyond standard R-rated talk and nudity on hand."

But what about Lindsay?
The New York Times dedicated nearly 7,500 words to the film's production (and Lohan's horrific behavior during filming) in a piece titled, "Here is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie." Kohn offers a post-script in just 10. "Here, Lohan is as bland and unfocused as the material," he wrote. "But even a topless Lohan and a group sex scene lit by swirling neon lights, the story fails to surprise."

But there's always one wild card in the bunch, and that comes courtesy of Variety's Scott Foundas, who can claim the distinction of writing the lone positive review of "The Canyons." (And Lohan noticed: from her court-ordered rehab stint she tweeted a link to it, saying, "Wow...humbled and feeling so much gratitude.")

Foundas loved Deen, who he says "is more than up for the challenge; he holds the camera captive with his chilly, privately amused stare." The picture is Schrader's "most stylish ... in years." And he even compares Lohan's performance to Marlon Brando's in "Last Tango in Paris": "Lohan may not go as deep or as far as Brando, but with her puffy skin, gaudy hoop earrings and thick eye makeup, there?s a little-girl-lost quality to the onetime Disney teen princess that?s very affecting."

So maybe there's hope after all, dubious as a "puffy skin" endorsement is. Will you seek out the highs, and the lows, of "The Canyons"? Let us know below in our "Discuss" section.

Nexgen Football Club tops Martin Luther King in 18U boys soccer

Sunday, July 28, 2013 10:46 PM EDT

NEW BRITAIN ? It was a long week for all athletes involved in the Nutmeg State Games, but when all was said and done only one team could be a gold medal winner in the 18U boys soccer division.?

While Martin Luther King, a team made of kids from around Hartford, made things interesting on Sunday evening at Veterans Stadium, the Nexgen Football Club came out on top with a 4-3 victory.

The team based out of Tolland, which has been together for just one week, gelled well and played their way all the way to a gold medal.

?It was fantastic,? NFC coach Steve Impey said. ?The boys worked really hard to come out on top with a gold medal and can?t really ask for much more. That was our goal going into it.?

Nexgen has the same story that so many other teams have before entering the Nutmeg Games. With many different athletes from various teams, they worked hard and really came together when it mattered most.?

?I was really happy,? Tyler Impey said. ?We just made this team out of the blue, so it was really good how we played and we really connected. We felt good as a team, came out here and obviously played our hearts out and made it work.?

Trailing 4-1, Martin Luther King made a game out of it with two second half goals from Adoni Tinker. While they didn?t make it all the way back, coach Lorenzo Ricketts could not have been more proud of the way his kids played throughout the week.

?I am so proud of them,? Ricketts said. ?We started here on Monday and one of the things I am proud and glad for is with all the adversities and stuff like that, nobody was seriously hurt. Win, lose or draw, we can come back to a tournament like this because it is well done. I think this is something great that New Britain is doing here, just that we have somewhere to take these kids.?

Nexgen struck for the first two goals of the game, the first one coming from a header by Zac Parracino off a great pass into the box by JD Stearns.

Zach Aukerman put his team up 2-0 with a shot that went off the crossbar before barely dropping into the goal.

After Martin Luther King picked up its first goal of the game just before halftime, Nexgen came out on fire in the second half.?

?We kind of came out hard in the second half, which was the plan,? Steve Impey said. ?We tried to put it away there. We knew the time, we knew what was left and we knew what to do. I thought the team played great. It?s a heck of a team for one week, that?s for sure.?

In the second half, Parracino was taken down hard in the box, but got shaken up on the play. Therefore, Tyson Bridge took the penalty kick and put it in the back of the net to make it 3-1. Bridge would add another one on another great pass from Aukerman, making it 4-1 and rounding out the Nexgen scoring.?

Ricketts was happy to see some fight in his team after falling behind 4-1, and it did not matter to him whether they won or lost. All that mattered was they got the chance to play.

?I?m so proud of these kids, that from where they came from, they could come to these heights and perform at this level,? Ricketts said. ?From what I?m told of (Nexgen), they are very good. A club team and a premier team is very different, but I love to play premier teams because we can learn so much from them.?

Tim Tebow's mobility helping defense prepare New England Patriots defense for NFL's mobile QBs

Since signing with the New England Patriots, quarterback Tim Tebow has yet to make a strong enough impression to put any real pressure on Ryan Mallett for the No. 2 spot on the quarterback depth chart.

While his arm has yet to impress, Tebow's legs have been a significant change of pace from the more conventional pocket passers that have been present in recent years, and could provide some value to the team in the long run. The unit that would benefit from Tebow's mobility, though, isn't the offense. It's the defense.

With quarterbacks like Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III popularizing the option-based rushing attacks, the Patriots is more and more likely to have to face off against dual threat QBs.

When asked about his impact in practice, defensive tackle Vince Wilfork talked about how facing a player like Tebow on a regular basis helps prepare for those types of threats under center.

"There might be some times where we might have to face a quarterback like that and he brings a whole different aspect to the game for us," Wilfork said. "Being able to practice against a guy that can basically run that type of offense is a plus for this team. Tim being here is a plus for this defense, because we have to be able to stop some teams that can come out and do that to us.

"He gives us great looks. I'm pretty sure in the future he'll be able to give us even better looks once he gets everything and gets settled in and we get into the season. I think it's a good thing for us."

When evaluating Tebow's value for the Patriots, much of the focus on been whether he will be able to catch on as a third-string QB. However, having a player like Tebow able to emulate that type of offense on the scout team can be a valuable asset for the Patriots defense, especially during the week of practice leading up to a game against a mobile QB.

The Patriots' 2013 schedule is largely devoid of teams that have shows signs of having a QB heavily involved in the rushing attack. The most likely candidates to shift to such a scheme would be the Bufallo Bills and New York Jets, both of whom drafted mobile QBs in the 2013 Draft. Those QBs, EJ Manuel of the Bills and Geno Smith of the Jets, are known more as pocket passers with mobility as opposed to running QBs, so it remains to be seen whether they'd end up running that type of offense.

Of course, both Manuel and Smith must first win the starting quarterback job on their respective teams.

Layoffs Hit 'Today,' 'NBC Nightly News'

NBC News has laid off a number of staffers at "Today" and "NBC Nightly News," the network confirmed on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the network told the Wrap that layoffs at "Today" happened on Tuesday, while a number of staffers at "NBC Nightly News" were laid off in a restructuring "a few weeks ago."

The spokesperson would not say how many people lost their jobs, but said "less than 2 percent" of each show's staff was affected. The New York Times' Brian Stelter said that nine people were reportedly laid off at "Today."

NBC News also laid off staffers at "Rock Center," Brian Williams' now-canceled newsmagazine show, in May. At the time, however, 60 percent of the staff had reportedly received offers for other jobs at the network.

TV Newser reported that the most recent changes seemed to be a continuation of the shake-up at the two programs: two correspondents left the network after their contracts were not renewed, and three senior producers at "Today" and "Nightly News" have also left.

It is the latest change at "Today," which has endured a rough year and a half since it lost its sixteen-year winning streak to "Good Morning America" and saw Ann Curry's messy ouster from the show. "Today," and Matt Lauer in particular, is still dealing with the fallout from Curry's departure. The show is now run by executive producer Don Nash and Alexandra Wallace, overall executive in charge of the four-hour program.

Wilton Cyclist Will Recall Cancer Victims In Challenge Ride

WILTON, Conn. -- It?s been three years since Jenn Lewis, of Wilton, was diagnosed with cancer and fortunately she remains cancer free.

On Saturday, Lewis will climb back on her bike, as the leader of the Team Be Positive team, to ride in her third consecutive Connecticut Challenge bike ride to help raise money for the challenge's cancer survivorship programs. Her team fundraising link is online.

This year, Lewis will be riding with a person very dear to her and in memory of two special people. Since last year?s ride, two close friends lost their battles with cancer. One of them, Elaine Berkowitz, is a woman she met while undergoing treatments and the other, Mark Kudzy was a good family friend and co-worker of her husband.?

?I will be riding in memory of Elaine and Mark this year and that will be very impactful for me.? Lewis said.

Among the more than 20 members of Team Be Positive will be Lewis? niece and goddaughter,?22-year-old? Katherine Shidler,? who is coming up from South Carolina to ride with her.

?Katherine and I have a close relationship, and it?s very meaningful that she is riding 50 miles with me to support a cause that is dear to my heart,? Lewis said.

Lewis was diagnosed with cancer of the appendix in 2010, several years after her sister was diagnosed with colon cancer.? While undergoing a nine-month recovery program she learned of the CT Challenge Bike ride during her treatment at Stamford Hospital. She rode in the CT Challenge for the first time that year and the organization has become a big part of her life.

Last October, the CTC opened the doors to the Connecticut Challenge Center for Survivorship in Southport. The center offers a wide array of services, programs and classes for survivors.?

"The beautiful thing about the center and fundraising for me is that it is so tangible,? Lewis said. ?I can see the fruits of the fundraising. The center is something I have taken advantage of and continue to use. I love being able to bring other survivors there to see what it has to offer. Losing friends to cancer does not help my mental well-being and I am grateful for the center so that I can be with other survivors who are working on the next phase of their lives."

Lewis stresses the impact of the center to her team.?? ?To try and help my team with their fundraising, I explain to them that it is a place for survivors to go to be with other survivors, participate in spin classes, yoga, and support groups, as well as the many other programs that are available for survivors and their caregivers.? The camaraderie there is inexplicable,? she said.

Team Be Positive does not relegate its fundraising efforts just to the ride. On Tuesday, it will have its third annual Guest Bartender Night at Marlys in Wilton. Team members will take turns tending bar with all tips going to the CT Challenge.

The? CT Challenge has helped Lewis in many ways and inspired her to go back to school this coming fall for a health coach certification at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Upon completion of the program, she hopes to counsel post-treatment cancer patients on how to make the necessary lifestyle change to live a cancer free life.

?I would not have thought of doing this if it wasn't for what I have been through,? Lewis said.

Rogers launches cellular-based home and small business phone ...

Rogers_Wireless_Home_Phone_-_Rogers

Rogers has launched a low-cost alternative to its VoIP-based landline phone service today called Wireless Home Phone.?Using existing cellular infrastructure for Canadians that don?t have access to traditional landline services, Wireless Home Phone will work with any existing cordless or corded receiver by using it as a base for a SIM card-based cellular signal.

The device, which will cost $29.99, contains a SIM card with a phone number, identical to the one you?d use in a cellular phone. Because it works with the existing phone infrastructure in your home, it?s possible to do away with landline service completely: introductory pricing starts at $9.99 per month for current Rogers customers, bringing unlimited Canada-wide calls, voicemail and caller ID. Call waiting, three-way calling, and international long distance is an extra $1.99, for a total of $11.99 monthly.

Wireless Home Phone, interestingly, will not be available to users in areas that are currently served by Rogers? existing service, which is considerably more expensive, but comes with a number of advanced features like voicemail-to-text and online management suite. Those with no existing Rogers products will also have to carry a $15 per month premium, at $24.99, than current customers, too. But having the ability to easily add or replace a home phone line which taps into Rogers? existing 3G cellular network infrastructure is a win-win for the company and rural customers, where the benefit of copper is not as common.

The service is available to small business users on a per-number basis for the same price. Fido will be launching an identical service ? Fido Wireless Home Phone ? with an identical price and feature set as well.

State rep introduces bill to carry concealed weapons in church

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The person sitting in the next pew at your church could be carrying a concealed weapon if a local lawmaker has his way.

State Representative Ron Maag, (R) Lebanon, has introduced a bill that would allow concealed weapons in churches, in day cares, on private planes and in government buildings.

Concealed weapons would still be banned in airports, schools and police stations.

Reverend Rick Groover, who pastors Celebration Church in Mason, says he supports concealed carry.

Groover, who is licensed to carry a firearm, says guns provide security in the hands of responsible people.

"I would rather be somewhere with responsible people who are carrying than be in a place that somebody who is going to do wrong knows that they could come into and there not be anybody with a weapon," said Groover.

Groover also says those who carry a concealed weapon need to have proper training.

?"You don't just go to a shooting range and see if you can shoot and be accurate," said Groover. "A lot of the day is spent dealing with legalities and what you can do. It's not the right to do anything you want to do. It's the right to do right."

In our commitment to balanced news FOX19 reached out to the Reverend Pete Mingo of Christ Temple Baptist Church in Walnut Hills who says he is opposed to having guns in his church.

"I don't feel that a house of worship should be a place where, you know, someone sitting across from you with a weapon. I don't think our situation has gotten that drastic," said Reverend Mingo.

Mingo says churches don't need to be entirely defenseless.

"Most churches I know where they have some form of security for the taking up of offerings or whatever, but as far as needing guns in a place of worship I don't think so even in daycare," said Mingo.

Mingo has worked with the Cincinnati Initiative to Reduce Violence known as CIRV and he has seen firsthand how gun violence affects the community.

FOX19 reached out to Representative Maag, but he did not respond to our request for an interview.

Meyer disciplines 4 Buckeyes, including Hyde, Roby

(AP) ? Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has disciplined four players for legal problems, including suspending leading-scorer Carlos Hyde from all team activities in the wake of an alleged assault against a female over the weekend in Columbus.

In addition, star cornerback Bradley Roby, who was arrested in Indiana for an altercation with a security guard at a bar this past weekend, will not represent the Buckeyes at this week's Big Ten media days. He was one of the players initially selected to speak to reporters at the annual event.

Freshmen recruits Marcus Baugh, a tight end, and defensive lineman Tim Gardner were also disciplined on Monday.

"I have a clear set of core values in place that members of this football program are constantly reminded of and are expected to honor," Meyer said in a statement issued by Ohio State late on Monday afternoon. "There are also expectations with regard to behavior. I expect our players to conduct themselves responsibly and appropriately and they will be held accountable for their actions."

There were published reports earlier in the day that Hyde had been kicked off the team for being listed as a person of interest in the alleged assault of a woman at a downtown Columbus bar. The Columbus Dispatch cited sources saying Hyde was dismissed from the team over the incident early Saturday.

Hyde, a 6-foot, 242-pound senior from Naples, Fla., rushed for 970 yards on 185 carries last season, second best on the team behind quarterback Braxton Miller, and was the unbeaten Buckeyes' leading scorer with 17 touchdowns and 102 points.

He came within just 30 yards of becoming the first running back to reach 1,000 yards in a season in Meyer's 12 years as a head coach at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and his lone year at Ohio State.

Roby, one of the team's top returning defensive players, was involved in a separate incident.

Court records in Monroe County, Ind., indicate Roby was arrested early Sunday morning in Bloomington, Ind., and is facing preliminary charges of misdemeanor battery resulting in bodily injury. He posted bond.

Roby, a 5-11, 192-pound redshirt junior from Suwanee, Ga., was Ohio State's third-leading tackler last year. He had two interceptions, one for a touchdown, to go with two tackles for minus yardage, one sack, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.

He had considered jumping into the NFL draft after Ohio State's 12-0 season but decided to return to the team.

Pending further investigations of Roby's actions, he could receive more punishment from Meyer.

The Bloomington police report charged that Roby tried to start a fight with one patron of the bar and was forced out of the bar. Hoping to get back inside with his friends, he attempted to re-enter the bar and was told he could not. The report states, "Mr. Roby then struck one of the security guards in the chest, causing a complaint of pain. He was then wrestled to the ground and detained until police arrived at the scene."

The two freshmen were considered promising prospects.

Baugh, like Hyde, was removed from all team activities and will also sit out the first game of the season, Aug. 31 vs. Buffalo, for his arrest last weekend for underage possession of alcohol and possessing a fake identification. The Riverside, Calif., native's actions will also result in the loss of his financial aid this summer.

Gardner, from Indianapolis, was sent home and will not be a part of the 2013 team after he was charged Saturday night by Columbus police with obstruction of official business.

It was not immediately known if he was linked to Hyde's arrest or that was yet another incident.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith praised Meyer's actions.

"Swift, effective and fair discipline is the standard for our entire athletics program," Smith said in the statement. "I applaud Coach Meyer for his immediate actions."

Meyer has faced questions in recent months after the arrest of one of his former players at the University of Florida, former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, was arrested on murder charges.

Football: Chelsea stroll to win against Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: English football giants Chelsea cruised to a 4-1 victory over a Malaysian selection as part of their pre-season Asia tour?on Sunday.

Bertrand Traore opened the floodgates in the fifth minute, tapping home a low cross from Kevin De Bruyne after a deft dummy from Romelu Lukaku.

The Blues doubled their advantage just before the half hour mark, as De Bruyne - returning from a loan spell at Werder Bremen - smashed home an unstoppable half volley after taking Lukaku's flicked header in his stride.

An awkward landing followed the scorching shot however, and the promising Belgian was stretchered off moments later clutching his knee.

But team manager Jose Mourinho dismissed concerns of a serious injury after the game.

Lukaku put the tie to bed in first-half injury time with a near post finish to make it 3-0.

The second half was pretty much a procession as Chelsea were barely threatened by a Malaysian side who lacked the spark to trouble the Blues' defence.

There was drama in the dying stages of the match as Victor Moses drove home a fourth for Chelsea in the 88th minute.

The Malaysian fans finally had something to cheer about in stoppage time as Fadhli Shas headed home a consolation goal for the home side.

Mourinho said he was satisfied with his team's performance.

"If this was an EPL match, we would have collected six points already. Even though we don't have the points, this is a good warm-up for us," he told reporters.

"So far I am impressed with the players' identity, personality and mentality to win, which is embedded in their system... Chelsea are learning to play the way I like," the new manager said, adding that De Bruyne had given the team a fright.

"When he signalled to the bench, we thought the worst. But after assessing him, we are relieved there is no ligament damage, and it's not a serious one," he said of the injury.

Chelsea's victory came on the heels of a 1-0 win over Thailand's Singha All-Star XI on Wednesday, thanks to a goal by Lukaku.

The Blues next head to Jakarta under close scrutiny after new team manager Jose Mourinho reportedly made a 10 million pounds (11.5 million euros, $15.1 million) bid for Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

The Premier League champions insist the England striker is not for sale.

Mourinho said Demba Ba would start the next match in Jakarta.

"Lukaku started this one so Ba will play in the next one. We are still without six players, which we will have for our United States tour," he said.

UAE: Egypt-based computer hackers foiled

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Officials in the United Arab Emirates say they have thwarted an attempt by Egypt-based hackers to bring down UAE government websites in apparent retaliation for backing the forces that ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The UAE has emerged as a leading Arab supporter of the military-led authorities in Egypt since Morsi was toppled earlier this month. The UAE also is a fierce opponent of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, charging supporters of the Islamist group with plotting to overthrow the UAE's Western-backed ruling system.

The UAE's Telecommunications Authority said in a statement Sunday that experts blocked the attempted hacking on Friday, saying it said caused "limited damage."

It said computer-tracking addresses of the alleged hackers were given to Egyptian officials.

Gary Patterson starts to reveal uniform for LSU game on Twitter

Thanks to Nike, the TCU football team has 48 different uniform combinations to choose from. But since they can only pick one Aug. 31 against LSU, there?s no telling what the Horned Frogs could roll into Cowboys Stadium wearing.

So when?s the big reveal? Well, it won?t be all at once.

Gary Patterson, who eclipsed his 1,000th Tweet this week, posted Thursday that he?ll be giving fans a peek at the Horned Frogs? season-opening uniform a little at a time. Then came this on Friday:

I?m not sure how a practice shoe fits in to an in-game uniform combination, but it?s a cool concept from Patterson, nonetheless. My guess: It?ll be a while before we see a helmet or jersey or even cleats.

In other Twitter-related Patterson news this week, he compared a tiger to a tailback?and an ocean bed to the recruiting landscape.

EA's College Football Games Will Play On

Yesterday, the NCAA announced that it would not be renewing its license with EA to make college football games. Despite the end of their contract with the NCAA, EA has announced that they will continue making college football games, due to both a continuing relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company, and the ability to talk to individual schools about using their likenesses and logos.

In a press release, EA Sports said: ?EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks. Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, conferences and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports.?

The only change that can be expected from the game is the loss of "NCAA" from the cover of the game. EA can now add playoffs and get licensing for individual bowl games and schools. According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, the bulk of EA's licensing payments went to the Collegiate Licensing Company, not the NCAA. EA's partnership with college football will continue, probably without an effect on sales. " In our view, the letters NCAA add little to the game experience, and we do not expect the game to sell materially fewer units when the letters are removed," said Pachter in an analyst's note.

Chilean Mummies Reveal Ancient Nicotine Habit

The hair of mummies from the town of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile reveals the people in the region had a nicotine habit spanning from at least 100 B.C. to A.D. 1450.

Additionally, nicotine consumption occurred on a society-wide basis, irrespective of social status and wealth, researchers say.

The finding refutes the popular view that the group living in this region smoked tobacco for just a short stint before moving on to snuffing hallucinogens.

"The idea was that around A.D. 400, people in San Pedro de Atacama (SPA) smoked tobacco in pipes, and then after that time, they gradually switched to inhaling dimethyltryptamines in snuffing trays," said study co-author Hermann Niemeyer, an organic chemist at the University of Chile in Santiago. "What we show is that's not correct." [See Images of the Chilean Mummy Findings]

Smoking and snuffing

The practice of smoking and snuffing hallucinogens was deeply rooted in the culture and thinking of many pre-Hispanic societies. In the south central Andes, two plant sources of hallucinogenic compounds exist: nicotine-containing species of Nicotiana (tobacco) and tryptamine-containing species of Anadenanthera (cebil).

"The proposal one most often reads is that [the hallucinogens] were used mainly by shamans," Niemeyer told LiveScience. The witch doctors sometimes used the plants as psychoactive compounds to connect with the gods and spirits from beyond. At lower concentrations, the substances became the ingredients for remedies for diseases, sleep problems and other ailments.

"The shamans were supposed to not only cure things by directly using something that attacked the illness, but also by contacting spirits through ceremonies," Niemeyer said.

Evidence in mummy hair

To get a better understanding of hallucinogen use in SPA throughout the ages, Niemeyer and his colleague Javier Echeverr?a analyzed hair samples of 56 mummies from the Late Formative to the Late Intermediate periods of SPA (100 B.C. to A.D. 1450). The mummies, Niemeyer explained, were in good condition, preserved naturally from the high temperatures, extreme dryness and high soil salinity in the Atacama Desert. Depending on the site, the mummies were either interred in the ground or entombed in "some sort of stony environment made for them."

A range of different objects were buried along with the mummies, such as jewelry, weapons, ceramic objects, raw metals, textiles, vases and various snuffing paraphernalia, including mortars, trays and tubes. The researchers used the number and type of objects as a proxy for the mummies' social and wealth statuses.

The team found nicotine in the hair of 35 mummies, spanning the full range of years. "The finding of nicotine was definitely unexpected," Niemeyer said. In the archaeological record of SPA, smoking pipes are gradually replaced by snuff trays after around A.D. 400 ??previous studies found evidence of nicotine in smoking pipes, but not in snuffing powder or snuffing paraphernalia, which were often associated with tryptamine alkaloids.

The team didn't find traces of tryptamine alkaloids in the hair samples, though this doesn't necessarily mean people didn't consume the cebil compounds. "When you inhale dimethyltryptamines, the body takes care of destroying it before it gets to the hair follicles," Niemeyer said.

The traces of nicotine weren't related to the presence of snuffing paraphernalia in the tombs, suggesting shamans, who are typically associated with such objects, weren't the only ones to consume the psychoactive alkaloids. Moreover, nicotine-laced hair wasn't related to the diversity of funerary objects or the presence of valuable gemstone necklaces.

The results, which will be detailed in the October issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science, suggest nicotine consumption in pre-Hispanic SPA occurred continuously for hundreds of years and was performed by people of all social and wealth statuses, Niemeyer said.
