The Global Controllers group is Merck's Corporate Finance group that has responsibility over the financial accounting and reporting activities for all legal entities located in the United States. This group provides accounting expertise to the headquarters and divisional financial services groups, and will serve as the liaison to these groups around accounting and reporting activities.

The Audit Intern will perform accounting activities on behalf of one of the following areas: Business Accounting and Support, Royalty Accounting and Joint Ventures, Inter-company Accounting, Process Support, Tax and Treasury Support, Entity Reporting and Forecasting.

Primary activities will include preparing and posting journal entries to the general ledger, developing financial statements and performing ad-hoc account analysis and reconciliations. Associate Accountants are also responsible for helping to maintain the integrity of US General Ledger including understanding and compliance in accordance with GAAP, Merck Policy & Procedures and all internal controls. This position is based in Whitehouse Station, NJ and will begin in June 2013. Internship will be for a period of 9-11 weeks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Prepare and post journal entries, accrual entries, adjustments and correction entries

* Participate in monthly General Accounting closing for Merck U.S. entities including: balance sheet, income statement and other financial information for internal and external reporting purposes

* Maintain control over balance sheet accounts through preparation of account analysis, journal entries, review of trial balance detail

* Prepare bank and/or account reconciliations

* Investigate and reconcile inter-company differences

* Participate in preparing financial information for inclusion in consolidated statements for Merck & Co., Inc.

* Prepares, maintains and archives documentation to satisfy audit and statutory requirements

* Provides customer support and responds to requests and accounting-related inquires

Qualifications

Required:

* Currently working towards BS/BA degree, having completed at least one year of college

* Effective communication and interpersonal skills

* Computer skills and accounting system knowledge

* Conceptual understanding of accounting principles

* Flexible work style in a team work environment

* Must be available for a 9-11 week period beginning in June 2013.

Preferred:

* Prior Accounting internship experience is a plus.
